Databases
For most of these databases I searched using the term "Alexander Hamilton", "Hamilton, Alexander" or the LOC term "Hamilton, Alexander,--1757-1804"
Jstor*: This is the premier place to look for scholarly articles both about and by Alexander Hamilton. They have numerous different items including things like "Alexander Hamilton: His Spirit Is Alive Today", a journal article on the contributions and life of Hamilton.
While a locked database, access to Jstor is available in most libraries and schools. You can do basic searches without any special usage attached, but for best searches using Boolean logic and specific searches are recommended. For instance, "Alexander Hamilton". Jstor was listed as the best overall database in 2013 by Library Journals magazine.
Center for Research Libraries:
The Center for Research Libraries is an" international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries." (CRL) You can request physical items to be sent to a local university that you are affliated with or click their "Digital" option to find online accessible options.
They provide a wide range of documents relating to Alexander Hamilton including "The conqueror: a dramatized biography of Alexander Hamilton" by Gertrude Atherton.
Searches can be basic to advanced much like Jstor although advanced searches are recommended for accuracy. Using Boolean operators between keywords such as "and" or "or", grouping keywords, and phrase searching with quotations can all help find good results. Rated a 4 star database by IpsaPortal, CRL contains copious amounts of otherwise inaccessible documents to the general public in a comprehensive format.
HathiTrust*: A collaboration of multiple institutions Hathitrust seeks to provide access to numerous digital books and documents. This is a great resource for biographical documents about Hamilton as well as documents written by Hamilton. Some of the documents included are things like a biography by George Shea entitled "Alexander Hamilton"
Hathitrust recommends using phrase searching and boolean operators when finding results. Be sure there is an option for "full view" to make sure that the document is accessible and not locked.
Hathitrust was given 4.5 stars for its searchability and accessibility by the Charleston Advisor.
WorldCat*: Is one of the most comprehensive database collections of library holdings. It contains many different resources for Alexander Hamilton including articles, books, videos, and audio recordings. There are many interesting items for those looking including the soundtrack to the Hamilton musical and a DVD copy of a PBS drama about Alexander Hamilton.
Much like the other databases phrase searching and boolean terminology are important to adequate results.
Library Journals discuss how indispensable that WorldCat is to reference services in one of their many review articles.
